Peoria

Springdale Cemetery is a beautiful Victorian rural cemetery on the east side of the city of Peoria, Illinois. The terrain contains numerous elevations and depressions, offering interesting perspectives on familiar monuments.

The cemetery was neglected for many years, until saved by a historic preservation agency with the assistance of the County and City of Peoria. The cemetery is now owned by the City of Peoria.

Among the persons buried here are Illinois Governor Thomas Ford, avaiation pioneer Octave Chanute, members of the Bradley family, and others prominent in the history of Peoria.

Additionally, within the grounds of Springdale Cemetery is a nature preserve: the Springdale Cemetery Savanna. Each month, volunteers work to preserve this rare environment.

Many of the historical notes in this section are based on material from www.springdalecemetery.com.
